Location and climate

The community is located around 34 km southwest of Madrid on the A-5 motorway at an altitude of around 670  m ; the old city of Toledo is about 60 km south. In the second half of the 20th century, comparatively low land prices and rents on the one hand, and improved traffic conditions on the other, led to a continued influx of people from rural areas, but also from the city of Madrid.

For centuries, the residents of the village lived as self-sufficient farmers from the surrounding area; Traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds settled in the village. Navalcarnero is now part of the Vinos de Madrid wine region . Since the 1960s, many residents have been commuting to work in Madrid every day.

history

Archaeologically usable evidence is missing from the Celtic as well as from the Roman , Visigothic and Islamic times. In the 10th century and especially after the reconquest ( reconquista ) of Toledo (1085) the area was repopulated by Christians from the north, but also from the south of the Iberian Peninsula ( mudéjares ) . Later it was disputed between the cities of Segovia and Toledo and in order to secure its sphere of influence, the City Council of Segovia founded Navalcarnero in 1499. In the course of time, the newly founded town broke away from the dominance of Segovia and received simple town charter (villa) in 1627 .

Attractions

Monument to Philip IV
  • The Plaza de Segovia is the center of the city; The old town hall (Casa Consistorial) and the main church of the city are located here , as well as cattle markets, festivities and bullfights . The fronts of most houses rest on wooden supports or stone pillars (soportales) .
  • The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . It was the first church in the village, but was enlarged in the Mudéjar style in the 1580s and then expanded to include chapels. The bell tower (camapanario) is decorated with overlapping arches.
  • Numerous other churches and hermitages (ermitas) are part of the cityscape.
  • The Wine Museum (Museo del Vino) provides information on the history and development of regional viticulture.
  • A bronze statue of Philip IV stands in the Plaza Puerta del Sol and commemorates the marriage in Navalcarnero in 1649 between the Spanish King Philip IV (ruled 1621–1665) and his bride Maria Anna of Austria, who was almost 30 years younger .
  • The wedding celebrations took place in the Casa de la Cadena , of which only the portal remains; the royal couple also spent their wedding night here.
