Due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms, the population of the municipality has decreased significantly since the 1950s, despite its location in the greater Madrid area. Only at the beginning of the 21st century can we see an increase again.
economy
For centuries the people in the region lived on a self-sufficient basis; Only foods that could be kept or preserved by salting or drying, such as olive oil , cheese, sausages, ham, animal skins, etc., were exchanged for other goods or sold at traveling traders. Today Carabaña is one of the most important producers of olive oil in the Comunidad de Madrid .
history
A cave settlement of the Celtiberians already existed here in pre-Roman times . Plutarch mentions a place called Caraca , the exact location of which is unknown, but is located by some in the valley of the Río Tajuna and could therefore be identical with Carabaña; Others see an excavation site in the area of the municipality of Driebes, about 20 km to the east, as the location they are looking for. Later there was also a Visigoth settlement here , which was taken over by the Moors in the 8th century . During the recapture ( reconquista ) of the cities of Toledo (1085) and Alcalá (1118) also fell Caravanna into the hands of the Christians, but you had to the late 12th and early 13th century still with army groups of the Almohad deal. Then the place came under the rule of the Archbishop of Toledo ; It was not until 1557 that it received town charter (Villazgo) , but a little later it belonged to the manor of the Genoese merchant family Lomelín.
