The Autonomous Community of Madrid ( Comunidad de Madrid in Spanish ) is one of the 17 regions of Spain . It lies on the plateau of New Castile , immediately south of the Castilian Scheidegebirge . The autonomous community consists only of the province of the same name and includes the metropolitan area around the capital Madrid . It has an area of ​​8,027.69 km² and 6,663,394 inhabitants (as of 2019). The highest point in the Autonomous Community is the Peñalara . The Autonomous Community of Madrid has its own representation with the Asamblea de Madrid . This exercises the legislative power in the autonomous community.

The biggest sights, in addition to the capital, are the monastery residence of Philip II in El Escorial , the old university town of Alcalá de Henares and the palace and gardens of Aranjuez , all three of which are world heritage sites .
