The Río Henares is a northeast-southwest flowing river in central Spain ( Guadalajara Province and Autonomous Community of Madrid ); it is a tributary of the Río Jarama .

Surname

Its name is probably derived from the Spanish word henar , which means something like "hay field", because originally a lot of agricultural cultivation (grain, hay) was carried out along its banks.

course

The Río Henares rises in the Sierra Ministra Mountains , near the town of Sigüenza , in the province of Guadalajara . It flows constantly in a south-westerly direction past the places Jadraque and Humanes ; later it flows through the cities of Guadalajara and Alcalá de Henares and finally flows into the Río Jarama about 15 km (as the crow flies) east of Madrid in the area of ​​the municipality ( municipio ) Mejorada del Campo .

Attractions

The Romanesque - Gothic cathedral of Sigüenza is one of the most important sights in the province of Guadalajara. The small town of Jadraque is located on the Camino del Cid and is dominated by a castle (castillo) ; the city of Alcalá de Henares is an old university town and possibly also the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes , the poet of Don Quixote .
