The Archdiocese of Toledo ( Latin Archidioecesis Toletana , Spanish Archidiócesis de Toledo ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in the Castilian city of Toledo . Francisco Cerro Chaves has been Archbishop of the diocese since 2019 .
history
The diocese was founded in the 1st century and has been an archdiocese since the 4th century . The episcopal see gained special importance in the Visigoth Empire . 18 Imperial Councils took place here, including a. the 3rd Council of Toledo in 589, at which the change from the Arian to the Catholic faith was decided, and the 4th Council of Toledo in 633, where the Filioque becomes significant for the first time . Since then, the Archbishop of Toledo has been associated with the title of Primate of Spain . Even during the time of the Moorish rule , the metropolitan retained its importance. At the end of the 8th century, Archbishop Elipandus of Toledo became the most important representative of Spanish adoptianism . From 1540 to 1920 the title of Patriarch of the West Indies was worn.
Traditionally, with a few exceptions, the Archbishops of Toledo were also admitted to the College of Cardinals from the middle of the 16th century .
