The Archdiocese of Pamplona y Tudela ( Latin Archidioecesis Pampilonensis et Tudelensis , Spanish Archidiócesis de Pamplona y Tudela , Basque Iruñeko eta Tuterako artxidiozesia ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Pamplona in Spain .

In 1956, the diocese of Pamplona became an archdiocese , and the dioceses of San Sebastián , Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño and Jaca were assigned to it as suffragan dioceses . Until then, the Pamplona diocese had successively belonged to the ecclesiastical provinces of Tarragona (from the beginning until 1318), Saragossa (1318–1574), Burgos (1574–1851), and again Saragossa (since 1851).

history

The tradition in Pamplona goes back to the beginnings of Christianity in St. Saturninus (also known as Sernin), Bishop of Toulouse ( France ), who preached the Gospel in the small Roman colony founded by Pompey in the middle of the 3rd century . Among the first to convert were Senator Firmo and his son Firmin , who later became the city's first bishop.

At the end of the 4th century, Liliolo was named Bishop of Pamplona in the 3rd Council of Toledo (589). It seems as if the diocese was relocated to Leyre during the Muslim invasion , until the year 829 the news about the diocese is lost.

The beginning of pilgrimages on the Way of St. James from the 9th century was a great boom for the diocese.

On March 27, 1783, Pope Pius VI. the Diocese of Tudela, which was under the Archdiocese of Burgos and from 1851 under the Archdiocese of Saragossa . The life of the new diocese with its own bishop was very short; as early as 1858 it was taken over by the bishops of Tarazona in the capacity of apostolic administrators . In 1955 the diocese of Tudela was incorporated into that of Pamplona. A year later, on August 11, 1956, Pope Pius XII. the bull Decessorum nostrorum , through which Pamplona was elevated to the rank of metropolitan bishopric. The Apostolic Constitution Supremam exercentes Pope John Paul II of August 11, 1984 finally unified the dioceses of Pamplona and Tudela.
