The Roman Catholic Diocese of Vitoria ( lat. : Dioecesis Victoriensis , span. : Diócesis de Vitoria , bask. Gasteizko Elizbarrutia ) is in Spain situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Vitoria-Gasteiz .

history

The diocese of Vitoria was on September 8, 1861 by Pope Pius IX. Erected with the papal bull in Celsisima from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Burgos and the dioceses of Calahorra y La Calzada , Pamplona and Santander and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Burgos as a suffragan .

In 1880 the seminary of the diocese of Vitoria was founded.

The Pope Pius XII. Following the Papal Bull Quo Commodius , the diocese of Vitoria gave up parts of its territory on November 2, 1949 to establish the dioceses of Bilbao and San Sebastián .

The territory of the diocese of Vitoria includes the province of Álava .
