The Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz ( Latin : Archidioecesis Emeritensis Augustanus-Pacensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the Autonomous Region of Extremadura in Spain with its headquarters in Mérida and Badajoz .

history

Badajoz Cathedral

The oldest surviving document that mentions the Metropolitan Province ofEmerita Augusta ” is a letter from St. Cyprian to the clergy and people of Emerita Augusta and dates from the 3rd century . The territory of the ecclesiastical province extended over large parts of Portugal to Salamanca and Ávila .

In 1119, with the elevation of the diocese of Santiago de Compostela to the archbishopric, all rights and privileges as well as the seats of the suffragan dioceses were transferred from Mérida, under Muslim rule, to the new archdiocese until Mérida would be recaptured and the archbishopric could be restored. Although the city was wrested from Muslim rule in 1228, the metropolitan seat could not be restored. Instead, bishops were appointed for Mérida and Badajoz.

On June 28, 1994, Pope John Paul II established the Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz with the Apostolic Constitution Universae Ecclesiae sustinentes and assigned him the dioceses of Coria-Cáceres and Plasencia as Suffragandiocese.
