The Roman Catholic Diocese of Santander ( lat. : Dioecesis Santanderiensis ) is in Spain situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Santander .

history

The diocese was established on December 12, 1754 by Pope Benedict XIV with the Apostolic Constitution Romanus Pontifex from ceding territory of the Archdiocese of Burgos and subordinated to this as a suffragan diocese. On December 8, 1861, the Diocese of Santander gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Vitoria . Another assignment of territory took place on November 2, 1949 to establish the Diocese of Bilbao . On October 27, 1954, the diocese of Santander was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Oviedo as a suffragan.
