The Honschaft Barl was first mentioned in 980 under the name Barala and at that time it belonged to the parish of Wald . The Nacker Bach formed the border to the parish of Solingen . Both parishes belonged to the office of Solingen , one of a total of 19 offices within the Duchy of Berg . The Honschaft Barl included the courts of Aufderhöhe , Löhdorf , Steinendorf , Zur Straßen and Küllenberg .

The honor also existed around the year 1220, when Count Engelbert von Berg divided his county of Berg into judicial districts. The Honschaft Barl was already at this time one of eight honors in the parish of Wald, which at the same time formed a judicial district from that time on.

On March 15, 1806, Elector Maximilian IV Joseph ceded the Duchy of Berg to Napoleon . New administrative units were created. Restructuring also took place between the parishes of Wald and Solingen. In this way, all the courts south of today's Löhdorfer Strasse and west of today's Nussbaumstrasse came to the parish of Solingen. Finally, on November 14, 1808, after the formation of the Mairien (mayor's offices), they became part of the Mairie and later the town of Höhscheid . The remaining courts fell to the Mairie Merscheid , later the city of Ohlig .

After the Grand Duchy of Berg fell to the Kingdom of Prussia through the Congress of Vienna , the Mairien were renamed mayor's offices.

In 1815/16 there were 1089 inhabitants in the Honschaft. According to the statistics and topography of the Düsseldorf administrative district , the following localities and places of residence (original spelling) belonged to the Honschaft 1832: Backershof , Lemminghofen , Zur Schänen , Wardt , Hübben , Dahl , Dahlerhammer , Oben Mankhaus , Below Mankhaus , Scharrenberg , Scharrenbergermühle , Alten Ufer , Neuen Ufer , Barl , Wiefeldick , Börkhaus , Löhdorf , Höh , Siebels , Neu Löhdorf , Jammertal , Greul , Straßen , Schorberg , Junkernhäuschen , Hülsen , Riefnacken , Heiperz and Auf der Bech .

At that time there were two public buildings, 210 residential buildings, four mills or factories, and 206 agricultural buildings. There were 1357 inhabitants in the Honschaft, 80 of them Catholic and 1277 Protestant.

The old Honschaftsschule was in Löhdorf, the building of which - a slated half-timbered house - is today's house at Löhdorfer Straße 299 . In 1822 a new school was built in Neu-Löhdorf - today's House of Youth on Friedenstrasse . Until 1895 the children from the separated parts of the honors went to school in Neu-Löhdorf (so-called percentage school ), until a new school was finally built in Aufderhöhe.

As part of the cities of Höhscheid and Ohligs, the area of the old Honschaft Barl came to the city of Solingen on August 1, 1929.
