history

According to tradition, there was a diocese in Tarragona as early as the 1st century.
The first bishop is documented by the saint and martyr Fructuosus for the year 259. It was an archdiocese since the end of the 5th century.

With the conquest by Moorish rulers, the archbishopric fell in 711.

After the Frankish conquest, bishops of Tarragona were mentioned again for 956 and 970–971, under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Narbonne .

In 1091 a nominal archbishopric of Tarragona was created again, in 1118 after the final reconquest with Saint Oleguer, the first actual archbishop was reinstated. Since 1207 the Archbishops of Tarragona had the right to crown the kings of Aragon in Saragossa .

Historical suffragan dioceses

In 1154 the Archdiocese of Tarragona was subordinate to the following suffragan dioceses:

The Archdiocese of Valencia , founded in 1238, also extended into the previous area of the Archdiocese of Tarragona.

In 1318 the Archdiocese of Saragossa was established with the suffragan dioceses of Huesca, Tarazona, Pamplona and Calahorra, which had previously belonged to Tarragona.

In 1593 the bishopric of Solsona was created from parts of the bishoprics of Urgell and Vic.

In 1964, the Archdiocese of Barcelona was removed from the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Tarragona without suffragan bishoprics.
