The diocese Asidonia-Jerez ( lat. : Dioecesis Assidonensis-Ierezensis ) popularly simply Diocese of Jerez called, is one in Spain situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Jerez de la Frontera .

history

San Salvador Cathedral in Jerez de la Frontera

In Asidonia (today: Medina-Sidonia ) there has been evidence of a Visigoth bishopric since the 5th century , which also existed under the Moorish rule in Al-Andalus and only went out in 1146 after the conquest by the Almohads .

The diocese Asidonia-Jerez was re-established on March 3, 1980 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Archiepiscopus Hispalensis from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Seville and subordinated to this as a suffragan diocese. With the naming, the Vatican consciously ties in with the historical diocese Asidonia, whose territory overlapped with the newly established diocese.
