Mutilla marginata is a hymenoptera fromthe ant wasps family (Mutillidae). The species issynonymouswith Mutilla europaea by some authors. However, the stronger and more woolly hair, the dotting of the sides of the propodeum and the distribution area, which differs from the similar species, speak for a species status.

features

The wasps have a body length of 11 to 14 millimeters (females) or 11 to 15 millimeters (males). The long head, antennae , legs and abdomen of the females are black, their thorax is red. The hair is curved at least at the end and a bit woolly on the silver bands. They are as long as the last two links together. The bands at the end of the first and second tergite , the entire third tergite and the end fringe on the fourth sternite are lightly haired. The parting is flattened. The ties of the second and third tergite are interrupted in the middle. The thorax is dorsally as well as on the sides above as well as the tergites are densely structured. The first tergite is almost as wide as the second, the pygidial plate is missing on the sixth . The males are colored black. Her hair is also curved, at least at the end, and a bit woolly on the silver ties. The bands at the end of the first and second tergite, the entire third tergite and the end fringe on the second and third sternite are lightly haired. The thorax is dorsally dotted like the tergites. The first tergite is almost as wide as the second.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is widespread in southern, central and eastern Europe as well as in Turkey and Syria. It is not known in which species the larvae are parasitoids ; it is assumed that they develop on bumblebees ( bombus ).
