José Mazuelos Pérez (born October 9, 1960 in Osuna ) is a Spanish clergyman and appointed Roman Catholic Bishop of the Canary Islands .

Life

José Mazuelos Pérez studied medicine at the University of Seville . He acquired in June 1983, a licentiate in medicine. Then Mazuelos Pérez practiced as a doctor in his hometown. During his military service in the Spanish Navy , José Mazuelos Pérez worked as a doctor at the San Carlos de San Fernando Military Hospital in Cádiz .

In October 1985 Mazuelos Pérez entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Seville and began studying Catholic theology and philosophy . On March 17, 1990, he received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Seville through Archbishop Carlos Amigo Vallejo OFM . José Mazuelos Pérez became pastor of the parish of San Isidro Labrador del Priorato in Lora del Río .

In September 1993 he was sent to Rome for further studies . In 1995 Mazuelos Pérez obtained a degree in moral theology from the Accademia Alfonsiana in Rome . José Mazuelos Pérez was born in 1998 with a moral theological dissertation with the title “Posibilidad y significado de una bioética mediterránea. Estudio de los modelos comparativo bioéticos de Gracia y D. Engelhardt HT " (" possibility and importance of Mediterranean Bioethics. Comparative study of bioethical models of D. Grace and HT Engelhardt ") at the Pontifical Lateran University for a doctor of theology doctorate . During his stay in Rome Mazuelos Pérez also completed a course in bioethics at the Medical and Surgical Faculty of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore belonging Gemelli hospital . In addition, he was active as a pastor in the parish of Santa Francesca Cabrini in Rome.

In October 1998, José Mazuelos Pérez became parish priest of the parish of Santa María de las Nieves in Benacazón and deputy director of the Center for Religious Aid at the University of Seville. He became director of the same center in October 2000. In addition, Mazuelos Pérez became the Delegate for University Pastoral Care and Spiritual of the Student Union of the University of Seville. On April 27, 2002, José Mazuelos Pérez became a penitentiary at Seville Cathedral and a member of the College of Consultors . Since 1998 Mazuelos Pérez was also professor of moral theology at the Theological Institute "San Juan de Ávila" and at the Higher Institute of Theology in Jerez de la Frontera . In addition, José Mazuelos Pérez was visiting professor at the Theological Faculty “San Dámaso” in Madrid and at the Theological Faculty “Redemptoris Mater” in Callao , Peru .

On March 19, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Bishop of Jerez de la Frontera . The Archbishop of Seville, Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo OFM, ordained him episcopal on June 6th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Manuel Monteiro de Castro , and the Military Archbishop of Spain , Juan del Río Martín .

On July 6, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of the Canary Islands.
