Carlos Amigo Vallejo
Carlos Cardinal Amigo Vallejo OFM (born August 23, 1934 in Medina de Rioseco , Valladolid , Spain ) is retired Archbishop of Seville .
Life
Carlos Amigo Vallejo entered the Franciscan order after briefly studying human medicine and studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Rome and Madrid . In 1960 he received the sacrament of ordination . After further studies in Rome and Madrid, he worked as a professor of philosophy of science and anthropology at various seminaries in Spain. From 1970 to 1973 he was Provincial Head of the Franciscan Order in the Province of Santiago .
On December 17, 1973, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Tangier . He received his episcopal ordination from Marcelo Cardinal González Martín in the Madrid church of San Francisco el Grande ; Co- consecrators were Félix Romero Menjíbar and Francisco Aldegunde Dorrego OFM . On May 22, 1982, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Seville. Carlos Amigo Vallejo, who holds several honorary doctorates , has been particularly active in the field of dialogue between Christians and Muslims in North Africa since his time in Tangier .
Since October 21, 2003, he has been a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli of the college of cardinals .
On November 5, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation from the office of Archbishop of Seville, submitted for reasons of age.
Since 2013 he has been Grand Prior of the Western Spanish Lieutenancy (España Occidental) of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and since 2003 Grand Protector of the Cavalieri della Mercede (Mercedarian Knights ) of the Compagnia di Santa Maria della Mercede (Rome) - temporarily alongside Fra Mariano La Barca Araja , the 86th Magister General of the Order of Mercedarians ( Mercedarians ) from 1998 to 2004.
Cardinal Amigo Vallejo attended the 2005 and 2013 conclaves .
