José Manuel Cardinal Estepa Llaurens (born January 1, 1926 in Andújar , Andalusia , Spain , † July 21, 2019 in Madrid ) was a Spanish Roman Catholic priest and military archbishop .

Life

After studying philosophy at the Pontifical University of Salamanca and Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , Salamanca and Paris , José Manuel Estepa received the sacrament of priestly ordination on January 27, 1954 from Leopoldo Eijo y Garay , Bishop of Madrid . In 1956 he also obtained a degree in catechetics from the Institut Catholique de Paris . In 1971 he was called to be consultor of the Congregation for the Clergy .

On September 5, 1972, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Tisili and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Madrid . José Manuel Estepa was part of the editorial team of the Catechism of the Catholic Church , published in 1992 , which consisted of six people, including the then head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger . Estepa was responsible for the drafting and edition of this catechism in Spanish. He was also editor-in-chief of the Holy See's General Directory for Catechesis.

On October 30, 2003, John Paul II accepted his resignation because of his age.

From 2008 to 2013 he was Grand Prior of the Western Spanish Lieutenancy (España Occidental) of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
