Military vicar

Military vicar ( Vicarius Castrensis ) was until 1986 the name of the church dignitary responsible for military pastoral care in a state.

With the Apostolic Constitution Spirituali militum curae of 1986, the Pope transferred the full episcopal rights to the military ordinary of the respective state.

Austria

According to Article VIII. § 1. of the Concordat between the "Holy See and the Republic of Austria" of June 5, 1933, the "ecclesiastical appointment of the military vicar ... is made by the Holy See after the latter has informed the Federal Government in confidential form whether there are general political reservations about the prospective personality. " This article also states that the military vicar holds episcopal dignity.
