Emilio Benavent Escuín

Emilio Benavent Escuín (born April 10, 1914 in Valencia , Spain ; † January 4, 2008 ) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Málaga and later Archbishop of Granada and Military Bishop of Spain.

Life

Emilio Benavent Escuín studied first theology and then literature and philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid . After the Civil War, he was in 1944 at the Pontifical University of Comillas with the work "La doctrina de la fe de San Gregorio Nacianceno" to Dr. theol. PhD . He was ordained a priest on July 18, 1943 and worked in pastoral care and as a teacher in adult education in the diocese of Málaga. In 1946 he became a canon and professor of theology, religious art and patristics in the diocese's seminary. He was also the spirit of the youth organization "Juventud de Acción Católica". From 1951 he built up the parish of San Patricio near Huelin.

On December 6, 1954 he was by Pope Pius XII. Appointed Titular Bishop of Cercina and Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Málaga. The Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Ildebrando Antoniutti , donated him episcopal ordination on February 13 of the following year; Co- consecrators were Rafael Alvarez Lara , Bishop of Guadix , and Antonio Añoveros Ataún , Coadjutor Bishop of Cádiz y Ceuta . In addition to his bishopric, he worked as vicar general , reigning the seminary and in important functions in the Spanish bishops' conference .

On February 13, 1960 he was appointed coadjutor bishop. He participated in the first and third session of the Second Vatican Council as a Council Father. On September 30, 1966, after the resignation of Ángel Cardinal Herrera Orias, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Malaga. On April 7, 1967, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Bishop of Málaga. On August 26, 1968 he was named titular archbishop of Tiburnia and coadjutor archbishop of Granada. With the death of Rafael García y García de Castro on February 3, 1974, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Granada. Pope Paul VI appointed him on May 25, 1977 titular Archbishop of Maximiana in Numidia and Spanish military bishop .

On October 27, 1982 Pope John Paul II accepted Emilio Benavent Escuín's resignation from the post of military bishop. On March 7, 1998 he renounced his titular seat Maximiana in Numidia .
