Ángel Herrera Oria
Ángel Cardinal Herrera Oria , also Angel Herrera y Oria (born December 19, 1886 in Santander , Cantabria , † July 28, 1968 in Madrid ) was a Spanish lawyer, journalist, politician and theologian. He was Bishop of Malaga and Cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Ángel Herrera Oria graduated from the Jesuit College of Valladolid and studied law at the University of Salamanca . In 1907 he entered the state lawyer service and was initially transferred to Burgos . As early as 1908 he took a leave of absence and left Burgos again to do a doctorate in law at the Central University in Madrid . Then he returned to the civil service.
In 1910 Herrera Oria became the first chairman of the Asociación Católica Nacional de Propagandistas (ACNP), which was founded in December 1909 at the suggestion of the Jesuit and priest Ángel Ayala , to spread Catholic positions in public life. In 1911 he founded the newspaper El Debate and the publishing house that edited it, which he was director from 1911 to 1933. Under his leadership, El Debate became one of the most influential newspapers in Spain in the 1920s. Since 1926, the Escuela de Periodismo has been part of the newspaper , which has developed into a prestigious school of journalism.
During the Second Republic , Herrera Oria was a well-known spokesman for Spanish Social Catholicism . Politically, he took a moderately conservative position that did not press for the unconditional restoration of the monarchy. He was chairman of the Acción Nacional party (later renamed Acción Popular because only state institutions were allowed to contain the name component "national"), which formed an important part of the Catholic-conservative collective party CEDA . From 1933 to 1936 Herrera Oria was President of the Central Committee of Catholic Action in Spain. Shortly before the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, he went to the University of Freiburg to study Catholic theology . On July 28, 1940, he received the sacrament of ordination there . He returned to Spain in 1943 and worked as a pastor in the Diocese of Santander until 1947 .
On April 24, 1947, Pope Pius XII appointed Ángel Herrera Oria as Bishop of Málaga. He was ordained bishop on June 30, 1947 by the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain and later Cardinal Gaetano Cicognani , co-consecrators were José María Eguino Trecu , Bishop of Santander, and Juan Hervás y Benet , Coadjutor of Mallorca . In 1965 he became a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sacro Cuore di Maria Immacolato ai Parioli in the College of Cardinals received. He attended the second, third and fourth sessions of the Second Vatican Council .
Ángel Herrera Oria died on July 28, 1968 in Madrid and was buried in the Cathedral of Malaga.

In November 1995 the beatification process was opened.
