Stephen Fumio Cardinal Hamao ( Japanese ス テ フ ァ ノ 浜 尾 文 郎 , Sutefano Hamao Fumio ; born March 9, 1930 in Tokyo , Japan ; † November 8, 2007 ibid) was Bishop of Yokohama and Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Stephen Fumio Hamao studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Tokyo and Rome and there received the sacrament of ordination from Luigi Traglia on December 21, 1957 . After his return home he worked as an archbishop's secretary, vice chancellor, notary and deputy official at the diocesan court. In addition, he performed the duties of a pastor at the cathedral parish and a secretary at the episcopal liturgy commission.

On February 5, 1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him . as titular bishop of Oreto and auxiliary bishop in Tokyo . He received the episcopal ordination on April 29 of the same year by the Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Japan, Archbishop Bruno Wüstenberg . Co -consecrators were Archbishop Peter Seiichi Shirayanagi and Bishop Lucas Katsusaburo Arai .

On October 30, 1979, John Paul II made him head of the Yokohama Diocese and on June 15, 1998 appointed him President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and People on the Move .

On October 21, 2003 he accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry San Giovanni Bosco in via Tuscolana in the college of cardinals .

After the death of John Paul II in 2005, Hamao first had to resign from his leadership position in the Roman Curia under canon law. During this time, he was a participant in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen.

He initially confirmed Hamao in his office as President of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care for Migrants and Travelers, but on March 11, 2006 accepted Hamao's resignation from his curial offices for reasons of age.

Cardinal Hamao died on November 8, 2007 of complications from bronchial carcinoma .
