Giovanni Cheli
Giovanni Cardinal Cheli (born October 4, 1918 in Turin , Italy , † February 8, 2013 in Rome ) was a Vatican diplomat and Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Giovanni Cheli studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Asti and at the papal “Athenaeum Lateranense” , where he obtained a licentiate in theology and a doctorate in canon law . On April 21, 1942, he received the sacrament of ordination in Asti . He then worked as a youth chaplain for Catholic Action and taught French, history and mathematics at the seminary in his home diocese.
After further studies from 1949 to 1952 at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See . He was initially from 1952 to 1955 attaché at the Apostolic Nunciature in Guatemala . Meanwhile he was also a lecturer at the Catholic University "Santa Maria" in Guatemala City and received on March 2, 1953 from Pope Pius XII. bestowed the title of Secret Chamberlain of His Holiness . From 1955 to 1962 he was secretary at the Nunciature in Spain and from 1962 to 1967 Nunciature Council in Italy . Pope Paul VI appointed him on March 1, 1965, House Prelate of His Holiness . From 1967 to 1973 Cheli worked for the Pontifical Council for Public Affairs at the Roman Curia .
In 1973 Paul VI appointed him. as Permanent Observer of the Holy See at the United Nations in New York . On September 8, 1978 Pope appointed him John Paul I to Titular Archbishop of Santa Giusta . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Secretary of State Jean-Marie Villot on 16 September of the same year; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Giuseppe Caprio and Agostino Casaroli .
Pope John Paul II appointed Cheli on September 18, 1986 Pro-President of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care for Migration and Tourism , whose name was changed on June 28, 1988 to "Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care for Migrants and People on the Move". On March 1, 1989, Giovanni Cheli was appointed President of the same council.
In the consistory of February 21, 1998, John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santi Cosma e Damiano in the college of cardinals . Cheli chose Unitas in Charitate (“Unity in Mercy”) as the motto . He publicly criticized the US invasion of Iraq during the 2001 Iraq War .
On March 1, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI raised him . to the cardinal priest pro hac vice . Cheli died in 2013 at the age of 94. He was buried in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Asti.
