Renato Raffaele Martino
Renato Raffaele Cardinal Martino (born November 23, 1932 in Salerno , Italy ) is a former Vatican diplomat and emeritus Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church and current cardinal protodeacon .
Life
Renato Raffaele Martino was a seminarist at Almo Collegio Capranica , he studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and at the Lateran University . In 1957 he received the sacrament of ordination . After further studies , he did his doctorate in the field of canon law and also specialized in diplomatic issues. In 1962 he entered the diplomatic service of the Vatican and worked as a secretary in the diplomatic missions of the Holy See in Nicaragua , the Philippines , Lebanon and Brazil . On September 14, 1980 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Segermes and Pro Nuncio in Thailand and Singapore as well as apostolic delegate to Laos and Malaysia . He was ordained bishop by Agostino Cardinal Casaroli on December 14th of the same year. In 1983 he became Apostolic Delegate in Brunei Darussalam and in 1986 Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York .
Since October 2002 he was President of the Pontifical Council Iustitia et Pax . Pope John Paul II accepted him in 2003 as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry of San Francesco di Paola ai Monti in the college of cardinals . Martino took part in the 2005 conclave in which Benedict XVI. was chosen to participate. He confirmed Martino in all his offices and on March 11, 2006 also made him President of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care for Migrants and People on the Move .
On February 28, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. Martino's resignation from the office of President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and People on the Move. Benedict XVI. accepted Martino's motion to resign from the office of President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace on October 24, 2009. Since 2010 he has been the Grand Prior of the Order of Constantine .
Since Cardinal Martino has already passed the age limit to participate in a conclave, he would, as cardinal protodeacon, crown the new Pope with the tiara at his inauguration or, in the now more common simple ceremony, put on the papal pallium , but not the newly elected Pope from the benediction loggia proclaim.
Act
On June 14, 2007 Renato Raffaele Martino announced in a statement to the NGO Amnesty International :
“The human rights group has betrayed its task. Therefore, individuals and Catholic organizations must stop supporting Amnesty International. "
He referred to the fact that the human rights organization had previously spoken out in favor of defending the right of women to abortion in cases of rape , incest and in cases of danger to the woman's health or life. This statement was heavily criticized, u. a. by the Green Chairwoman Claudia Roth . This call was also broadcast by Vatican Radio , but not fully reproduced on the official website.
