Cardinal Protodeacon
The cardinal protodeacon is the longest serving cardinal deacon (one of the three cardinal classes ). Since all cardinals are equal to each other (there is only one honorary rank), the cardinal protodeacon is only a primus inter pares among the cardinal deacons. One of his tasks is after a successful papal election in the conclave of the benediction loggia of the news of the election of a new pope to inform the public with the following words:
“Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam!
Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum,
Dominum [first name], Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem [last name],
qui sibi nomen imposuit [papal name]. "
“I announce great joy to you: we have a Pope!
The most outstanding and most venerable Lord,
Mr. [first name], of the Holy Roman Church Cardinal [last name],
who has given himself the name [Pope's name]. "
If the cardinal protodeacon does not participate in the conclave, this task falls to the next highest-ranking cardinal deacon who takes part in the conclave.
The cardinal protodeacon may also have the coronation of the new Pope with the tiara. If the new Summus Pontifex chooses a simpler inauguration ceremony, the cardinal protodeacon puts on him the papal pallium . Furthermore, the cardinal protodeacon , acting on behalf of the Pope, puts the pallia on the metropolitans or hands them over to their procurators .
Renato Raffaele Martino has been the incumbent since June 12, 2014 ; his predecessors are on the list of Cardinal Protodiacons .
