tasks

One of the tasks of the Council within the Curia was to organize and carry out the humanitarian aid operations of the Holy See in areas of crisis and disaster. Furthermore, it should coordinate the global charitable activities of the Catholic Church and its associated institutions and organizations. Another function consisted of the management of the Populorum Progressio foundations assigned to him and the Sahel Zone Foundation established by John Paul II in 1984 . Due to its range of tasks, it was therefore often referred to as the “papal development ministry”.

In his Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus of June 28, 1988, Pope John Paul II defined the work of Cor Unum as “the care of the Catholic Church for those in need, so that brotherhood among men may grow and Christ's love may be shown”.

On August 17, 2016, Pope Francis ordered the dissolution of the Council on January 1, 2017 with the Motu Proprio Humanam progressionem. The previous competences of the Council were taken over from this point on by the newly established Dicastery for the holistic development of man , whose leadership the Pope the previous President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace , Peter Cardinal Turkson , transferred.

structure

Initially, the Council under John Paul II was headed in personal union by the Cardinal President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace . In 1995 the Pope deviated from this practice for the first time and appointed the German Archbishop and today's Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes as President of the Council. The Pontifical Council of Cor Unum was last headed by a cardinal president, assisted by a secretary and an undersecretary. In addition to the president, the council itself consisted of 38 members and nine consultors who were appointed by the Pope for five years each.
