Publications

Cordes became known to a wider public through his investigation into the role of fathers in modern society: The lost fathers - an emergency call. Freiburg (Herder) 2002.

Cordes analyzes family structure , marriage law and father role and, taking psychological studies into account, comes to the conclusion that the “corrections” of male identity have devastating effects on the mental health of men, children and partner relationships.

Particularly explosive and controversial is Cordes' presentation of the possible relationship between the role of a father, the willingness of fathers to use violence, right-wing extremism among young people, eating disorders and clinical depression in girls: "'Women-centered families' trigger ... violent, demonstrative masculinity among young people" (p. 31) ,

Cordes therefore calls for a return to a religiously based understanding of the roles of men and fathers.

The role of the man is determined by the detachment from the woman or mother . “The boy must learn not to become a woman” (p. 32).

The role of the father is to “unmix” the relationship between the child and the mother (p. 25): “It is ultimately only through the intervening of the father that a mother becomes a you for her child. Otherwise it forms an indissoluble cocoon with the child and prevents it from becoming independent and approaching reality. ”(P. 25) Following Erik Erikson , Cordes emphasizes the irreplaceability of the father for the development of an identity and the creation of the Self-esteem of the child: “'There is something that only a father can do: only he can compensate for the threatening dominance of his appearance through the guardianship of his leading, guiding voice.'” (P. 50, quote from Eikson's Luther study, p. 134 )

The main part of the presentation, however, deals with the religious foundation of the father role. In contrast to Islam and Judaism , Cordes works out the father image of the trinitarian concept of God and shows that behind the father role in the family the Christian understanding of God must stand in order to provide orientation and at the same time to open the horizon to the transcendental meaning of human life. Thus, fatherly love (in its two meanings) is always at the same time “love of God”.

Its demarcation from Islam is explosive when, indirectly (in an appeal to John Henry Newman ), theologians are assigned excommunication if they identify the Islamic God with the Christian one and recognize Islam as a revelation (probably an allusion to Hans Küng ) ( P. 170f, note 82, on p. 140).

For the publication Helpers don't fall from the sky. Caritas and Spirituality , which Jürgen Rüttgers and Franz Müntefering presented to the public in Berlin in 2008, writes Pope Benedict XVI. In the preface: “I am pleased that Cardinal Cordes is taking up and developing the impulse with great energy that I tried to initiate with my encyclical Deus caritas est . As part of this effort, I applaud his book Helpers Don't Fall From Heaven. Caritas and Spirituality , in which it is shown from many sides what is contained in the basic word Caritas (love) . So I wish you attentive listening to the book, which penetrates the heart and, beyond listening and reading, leads to doing love and to deeper fellowship with Jesus Christ. "

Defeat evil with good. Limits of Psychology and the Power of Faith , Augsburg (Sankt Ulrich Verlag) 2009. In a review of the FAZ in 2009 it says: “Not so long ago one would have considered such a book to be apolitical and highly out of date. [...] Perhaps it took the shock of a global financial and economic crisis in western societies to understand correctly the first sentence of Cardinal Cordes' book: 'Nobody will deny that we are fascinated by evil.' Or another: 'The cruel malice of our contemporaries makes us wake up again and again in shock.' Why 'the evil', why 'the wickedness' would have been asked innocently recently and with nimble explanations (supposedly) disposed of the matter in the same way as bad loans. "
