The Province of Santiago is a province in the Región Metropolitana in Chile . In it are 32 of the 37 municipalities of Greater Santiago ( Gran Santiago ). The province has 4,927,624 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) and an area of 2030.3 square kilometers. The population density is thus 2,427 inhabitants per square kilometer. The capital is Santiago.
The province of Santiago lies in a basin, surrounded by the peaks of the Andes on the River Mapocho . It is bounded in the north by the Aconcagua Valley, in the south by the Rancagua Basin and laterally by the two Cordilleras. It borders on all five other provinces of the region and in the area of the municipality of Lo Barnechea also on the Región de Valparaíso .
With the capital Santiago, the province is the undisputed political center of Chile, even if the Chilean parliament, the National Congress ( Congreso Nacional ), meets in Valparaíso .
The province is an important traffic junction as well as the most important economic and cultural center of Chile with numerous universities, colleges, museums and monuments. The most important companies in Chile are based here, as are many foreign branches. The province is also the country's media hub.
