Maipú is a municipality within Santiago de Chile , about 15 km southwest of its center. The settlement, which was only founded at the end of the 19th century, has grown at an accelerated rate since around 1970 and is currently (as of 2008) the most populous municipality in Chile with around 690,000 inhabitants. Maipú is known as the site of the last great battle in the war of independence against Spain and as a place of pilgrimage with an imposing votive church .
