The Santiago Metropolitan Region ( Spa : Región Metropolitana de Santiago ) is an administrative region in Chile . It is roughly in the middle of the country. The capital of the region is Santiago de Chile , which is also the capital of Chile. With over 7 million inhabitants, Metropolitana de Santiago is by far the most populous region and represents the economic and cultural center of the country.

The region is bordered by Region V ( Región de Valparaíso ) to the north and west and Argentina to the east . In the south it borders on Region VI ( Región del Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins ). It is sometimes referred to as the Thirteenth Region . It is the only region that does not border the Pacific.

Although it is very small in area, it is still the administrative and economic center of Chile. Around 40% of the country's population live here. Forty percent of the gross domestic product is generated here. The region is also home to important political institutions, although the Chilean parliament, the congress, meets outside of the region in Valparaíso .

Santiago lies in a basin, surrounded by the peaks of the Andes on the River Mapocho .

Santiago was founded on February 12, 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia .

To the south of the city lies the plain on which the armed forces of Chile under Bernardo O'Higgins defeated Spain on April 5, 1818 in the Battle of Maipu . This established the country's independence.

economy

The most important companies in Chile are based in Santiago, as are many foreign branches. Santiago is also the country's media center, with national TV stations broadcasting from the capital and the most important Chilean newspapers appear here: El Mercurio , La Segunda and La Tercera . The region is one of the largest wine-growing areas in Chile .
