history

From 1811 major work began on the Maipo Canal , which should ensure the water supply in the area around San Bernardo and Santiago. The work was partially stopped during the war of independence. In 1819, Bernardo O'Higgins sent 200 prisoners to speed up the canal work. The work lasted until 1827. Then President Ramón Freire y Serrano opened the canal to the public.

On February 9, 1821, the construction of the city of San Bernardo was decided by the Senate. It received its town charter on September 27, 1830.

On July 16, 1955, a serious train accident occurred in the city in which 50 people died. Others suffered serious injuries.

Until the 1980s, the main workshops of the Chilean state railway Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado , which were the city's most important employer for many decades , were also located here . Today (2009) there is only one empty building left. The remaining area was built over with single-family houses. Only the Maestranza S-Bahn station (workshop) is still a reminder.
