Río Mapocho

Río Mapocho is a river in central Chile in the Capital Region ( Región Metropolitana ).

The Río Mapocho has a length of around 120 km. Its source is northeast of Santiago de Chile in the Andes . After around 50 km the river flows through the capital of Chile, Santiago . The water quality decreases sharply within Santiago. The river flows via Peñaflor to El Monte , where it then flows into the Río Maipo .

A large number of canals emanate from the river. Some of the most famous include the Maipo Canal , San Bernardo Canal , San Francisco Canal, and the Las Mercedes Canal . Since the Mapocho does not have enough water to supply all connected irrigation projects, water from the Río Maipo is supplied to it in Santiago with the San Carlos Canal , which is taken further south at Puente Alto .

history

Santiago was founded on February 12, 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia . Valdivia chose the place because the Río Mapocho formed a larger island here. This location was favorable to defend the city against the attacks of the Mapuche .

In 1778 the first bridge was built over the river, the Puente Cal y Canto . In order to secure the water supply for the agricultural areas, the construction of various canals began as early as the 18th century. From 1811 , major work began on the Maipo Canal , which should ensure the water supply in the area around San Bernardo and Santiago. The work was partially stopped during the war of independence. In 1819 , Bernardo O'Higgins sent 200 prisoners to speed up the canal work. Work lasted until 1827 , when President Ramón Freire y Serrano opened the canal to the public.
