The Aisén region is criss-crossed by huge glaciated areas, fjords and countless islands. The glacier areas of Campo de Hielo Norte and Campo de Hielo Sur cover huge areas of the region. These areas begin roughly at the height of Chile Chico in the west.

At the level of the Río Baker or Baker Canal , the ice drift begins , pushing ice from the Antarctic to the west coast of Patagonia . Far to the west are the large Taitao peninsula and the islands of the Chonos archipelago . This area has several large national parks.

In the east lies the largest lake in Chile, Lago General Carrera with an area of around 2,200 km². The lake is partly on Argentine territory.

Active volcanoes such as Cerro Hudson covered z. B. the area around Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez with heavy ash rains recently.

The climate in the southern areas of Aysén is already very polar with winters around −20 ° C. The climate around Lago General Carrera is more pleasant . Chile Chico is also called "Ciudad del Sol".

history

Before the colonists settled, the Kawéskar or Alacalufes lived in the region. In 1553 Francisco de Ulloa reached the Taitao peninsula for the first time on behalf of Pedro de Valdivia . In 1766/67 the Jesuit Father José García Alsué undertook a four-month missionary trip through the western Patagonian islands and reported, among other things, of a river that he named Estero Aysén .

Around 1899, the German geographer Hans Steffen explored and mapped West Patagonia . The border with Argentina remained controversial for a long time until the British King Edward VII established the official Chilean-Argentine border on November 20, 1902. After that, the gradual settlement of the region began. The cities were not officially formed until around 1925.

The Carretera Austral highway was built by the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet from 1976 to 1997. It leads from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins .

In 1991 the Cerro Hudson volcano erupted 100 km northwest of Chile Chico . This was one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the last century. Many cities in the area were covered in ash rain.

The long-awaited upswing in the region came with the Carretera Austral . The region lives mainly from tourism, fishing and sheep breeding. Forestry plays a bigger role in the north. There are several zinc and gold mines in the area.

There is a border traffic with Argentina , as well as ferry connections to Puerto Montt . Many cities have their own small airports in order to bridge the large distances between the places more quickly.
