Angelit is a Finnish women duo from the village of Angeli. The style of the duo takes up elements of traditional Sami folklore and includes joik singing.

history

In 1982 Eino Ukkonen, a Finnish teacher, took the two sisters Ursula and Tuuni Länsman and four other boys and girls to a Sámi festival in Utsjoki , where they performed as a singing group. That was the hour of birth of Angelit. In 1987 the group released a first non-commercial tape of Christmas carols, which had been recorded with Mari Boine . In 1989, one of the members died in a car accident and the band split.

Only the two Länsman sisters remained and from now on they called themselves “Angelin tytöt” or “Aŋŋel nieiddat” ( Angeli's girl ). In 1992 they released their first album Dolla (dt. Fire ), followed by Giitu (dt. Thank you ), on which Alfred Häkkinen also participated.

In 1994 there was a first collaboration with Waltari for the title track of the album So Fine! . On the following tour they performed together - also with additional pieces. In 1995 they were represented with the song Jänkhä on the album Big Bang ; after that there was a joint tour and since then several joint appearances. Also in 1995, the third album was released Skeaikit (dt. Laughter ).

In 1997 the band was renamed "Angelit" (Eng. The Angelis ).

In 1998 Angelit and Waltari recorded the first complete album together, which was not released until 2000 as Waltari + Angelit: Channel Nordica . Angelit contributed some joik samples to the album Alankomaat by the Dutch group Nits , which was released in 1998 .

In 1999 Angelit released her fourth album Mannú ( Eng . Moon ). Mannú differed from the previous albums in that traditional Sami music was mixed with modern dance beats. There were also three new band members: Samuli Kosminen, Mamba Assefa and Kimmo Kajasto.

The previous album Reasons was released in 2003.
