Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez is a city in southern Chile in the Región de Aisén (Region XI). The city is located around 116 km southeast of Coyhaique on the largest lake in Chile, Lago General Carrera . It has around 2500 inhabitants (2003).

It was named after Cornelio Ibáñez , an engineer who looked for new mining mines and spent several years in the area.

geography

The city lies on the Río Ibáñez , which flows into the huge Lake General Carrera . The river plunges into the lake over many small waterfalls and rapids. The Argentine border is not far away, so parts of the lake belong to Argentina and are called Lago Buenos Aires there. Lago General Carrera has an area of around 970 km² (1850 km² with Lago Buenos Aires together). Due to its southern location, the climate is already quite polar.

history

The city was founded in 1924. In 1952 a road to Argentina was opened, which brought a certain economic boom. The connection to the large Carretera Austral highway took place in the early 1990s. In 1971 and 1991 the city was covered by great ash showers from the Cerro Hudson volcano . The volcano is located northwest of the city at an altitude of 1,905 m.

economy

The city lives mainly from fishing, goods traffic to Argentina and tourism around Lake General Carrera.

tourism

Ferry trips on Lake General Carrera are popular tourist excursions. There is a ferry from Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez to Chile Chico on the southern side of the lake. The city can be easily reached by bus from Coyhaique . Nearby is the region's largest and most important airport, Balmaceda.

The Río Ibáñez is a popular fishing area. Southwest of Lago General Carrera is the smaller lake Lago Bertrand , whose high mountains surrounding it are ideal for mountaineering.
