Chile Chico is a city in the south of the South American Andean state of Chile . It is located in the Región de Aisén (Region XI). The city is located around 130 km southeast of Coyhaique on Chile's largest lake, Lake Buenos Aires / Lake General Carrera . It has 4865 inhabitants (2017).

The city lies on the southern bank of the huge Lake General Carrera which flows into it. The city is an important border city with Argentina .

The Lago General Carrera has an area of ​​around 2200 km².

The climate is still pleasant due to the lake location for the southern location, the city is also called Ciudad del Sol .

history

The first families came to Chile Chico from Argentina around 1909. In 1917 there was a war over land rights, the 'Guerra de Chile Chico'. The state had given the land rights to the Swede Carlos von Flack and practically expropriated the settlers. The uprising of the settlers became known throughout Chile, so that in 1918 the government returned the land rights to the settlers.

The city was officially founded on May 21, 1929. The connection to the large Carretera Austral highway took place in the early 1990s.

In 1971 and 1991 the city was covered by great ash showers from the Cerro Hudson volcano . The volcano is located northwest of the city at an altitude of 1,905 m.

economy

The city lives mainly from fishing, sheep farming, fruits such as apricots and cherries, which ripen particularly well in this microclimate , goods traffic to Argentina and tourism around Lake General Carrera / Lake Buenos Aires. To the west of the city are some gold mines .

Ferry trips on Lake General Carrera are popular tourist excursions. There is a ferry from Chile Chico to Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez on the northern side of the lake. Nearby is the largest and most important airport in the region, El Portezuelo and Los Antiguos in Argentina.

To the west of the city, the winding Paso Las Llaves road leads through beautiful mountain areas.

The Chile Chico Museum and Culture Center shows local art, fossils and minerals. The museum ship El Andes can be visited, which used to sail Lake General Carrera.

The nature reserve Lago Jeinimeni with large forests is 60 km south of the city .
