history

View over Cochrane

In 1899, the German geographer Hans Steffen was the first to explore the area around the Río Baker . In 1930, by order of the government, active settlement began in the area. The city was officially founded in 1954. It is named after the British Thomas Cochrane , who assisted Chile in the fight for independence against Spain and commanded the Chilean fleet from 1817 to 1822.

economy

The city lives mainly from fishing and tourism to the southern ice fields and glaciers . With the Carretera Austral came a certain economic boom in the city. The provincial prison is located in the village.

tourism

Cochrane is a stopover on the Carretera Austral, which continues to the south of Chile. The first Patagonian ice fields await tourists at the mouth of the Río Baker - the northern one is about 55 km west-northwest of Cochrane, the southern one about 120 south. The area is criss-crossed by many glaciers.

The national reserve Reserva Nacional Tamango on Lake Cochrane offers rare animal species such as the Huemul . The rivers around Cochrane are very rich in fish, ideal for anglers and fly fishers.
