Villa O'Higgins is a small village in Chile in the south of the Región de Aisén (Region XI). The place has around 400 inhabitants.
geography
It is located around 200 km southwest of Cochrane on the Argentine border, next to Río Mayer and Lake O'Higgins .
Due to its southern location, the climate is already quite polar, with winter temperatures falling to −20 ° C.
history
Before the colonists settled, the Kawéskar people lived in the region. The German geographer Hans Steffen explored the area around 1899 . The border remained controversial for a long time until the British King Edward VII set the official Chilean-Argentine border on November 20, 1902. The first colonists began to settle in the area from 1903. The settlement destroyed many wooded areas. The village was officially established on September 20, 1966.
Before it was connected to the great Carretera Austral highway in 1997, relatively few settlers lived in Villa O'Higgins. The place is currently the southern end point of the trunk road.
economy
With the Carretera Austral there was a certain upswing in this remote area. Besides tourism, sheep farming and fishing play a role. The place has a small airport called Aérodromo de Villa O'Higgins .
tourism
To the west of the city is the huge Bernardo O'Higgins National Park and the glaciated areas of Campo de Hielo Sur . The area is ideal for anglers and mountain bikers.
