Melipilla is a city in the middle of Chile . It is located in the Metropolitana region and is the capital of the Melipilla province of the same name .
population
According to the 2017 census, the municipality of Melipilla has 123,627 inhabitants (2002: 94,540), of whom 84,724 live in urban settlements in the municipality, the remaining inhabitants in the rural outskirts. 72,650 inhabitants live in the actual urban settlement core, the inner area of the city of Melipilla.
Geography and climate
The city is located about 60 km west of Santiago de Chile . Its territory is bordered by the coastal mountains to the north, to the northeast by the province of Chacabuco , to the east by the province of Santiago and to the southeast by the province of Talagante . It is about 170 m above sea level. The Maipo River flows near the city .
Melipilla borders the valleys Valle de estero Puangue on the Valle de Alhué . The area is criss-crossed by granite formations that originate from earlier volcanic eruptions . Every year between 500 and 800 mm of rain falls.
history
The city was founded on October 11, 1742 by Governor José Antonio Manso de Velasco under the name of San José de Logroño . It was not until 200 years later that the city was renamed Melipilla. It received its town charter on December 20, 1870. On April 1, 1980, it became the capital of the province of the same name.
Attractions
Near the town is Pomaire, a pottery village. In the Curacaví area you can buy traditional paintings of the Vendimia culture. On the La Ruta del Queso , a kind of city tour, you can experience the city and the surrounding area directly. Visits to agricultural institutions, bars and cultural sites are planned here.

Melipilla is a modern industrial city and service center. The surrounding area is characterized by agriculture and mining . Copper and gold are mined in the mines .
