Colina is a city in the middle of the South American Andean state of Chile . It is located in the Región Metropolitana de Santiago , has 146,207 inhabitants (as of 2017) and is the capital of the province of Chacabuco .

geography

Colina is located about 26 km north of the capital Santiago at about 900 m above sea level. The city is best known for its thermal baths and the battle of Chacabuco . The climate is Mediterranean.

Colina has become known in recent years for the numerous new development areas in the Chicureo district. Two new motorways connect Chicureo with Santiago and Vitacura.

history

The Incas settled the area as early as 1400. Pedro de Vizcarra founded a hacienda near Chacabuco in 1599, which was later used by the Jesuits . In 1622 a church was built that is now a national monument. On November 24, 1723 the land around Colina was acquired by R. Padre Maestro F. Joseph de Carvajal and then divided into many small parcels. From February 12 to February 14, 1817, the Battle of Chacabuco took place near the city. It formed the basis for Chile's independence. On December 22nd, 1891 the community Colina was formed and on May 25th, 1896 it received its town charter.

In 1958, NASA established a satellite tracking station near Colina. Today the headquarters of the Chilean special forces are in Colina.

Attractions

The Termas de Colina are large thermal springs that attract many tourists with their 25 ° C warm water. In addition, the ancient Inca settlements and the monuments of the Battle of Chacabuco are often visited destinations. The Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción de Colina has been a national monument since 1971.

economy

The area around Colina is characterized by agriculture. Due to its proximity to Santiago de Chile, the city is also an important service center. Otherwise, tourism in particular plays an important role.
