José María Cardinal Bueno y Monreal (born September 11, 1904 in Saragossa , † August 20, 1987 in Pamplona ) was Archbishop of Seville and Spanish Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

José Bueno y Monreal studied as a seminarian at the Pontifical Spanish College of St. Joseph , at the Pontifical Gregorian University and at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome . He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Madrid on March 19, 1927 and then taught at the seminary in Madrid until 1945 . In 1945 he was appointed canon .

On December 1, 1945, he was appointed Bishop of Jaca . The Bishop of Madrid, Leopoldo Eijo y Garay , ordained him episcopal on March 19 of the following year ; Co- consecrators were Casimiro Morcillo González , auxiliary bishop in Madrid, and Luigi Alonso Muñoyerro , bishop of Sigüenza . Pope Pius XII made him Bishop of Vitoria on May 13, 1950, and on October 27, 1954, Coadjutor Archbishop of Seville and Titular Archbishop of Antioch in Pisidia .

On April 8, 1957, the anniversary of the death of Cardinal Pedro Segura y Sáenz , he succeeded him as Archbishop of Seville. John XXIII took him on December 15, 1958 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia in the college of cardinals . From 1962 to 1965 Monreal took part in the Second Vatican Council , together with José Cardinal Quintero Parra , supported by Paul Cardinal Zoungrana , he wrote one of the closing messages on December 8, 1965. He was one of the electoral cardinals who attended the 1963 conclave and again in the August and October 1978 conclaves . On May 22, 1982, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation after twenty-five years in the service.

The cardinal died on August 20, 1987 at the age of 82 in Pamplona. He was buried in Seville Cathedral.
