The Bellevalia are a genus of plants within the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The approximately 70 species are distributed from the Mediterranean area , Turkey (26 species) and Israel (eleven species), to central Asia: Iran , Afghanistan and Pakistan (two species).

description

Bellevalia species are perennial herbaceous plants . These geophytes form onions with a membranous, brown coating ("tunic") as persistence organs. There are only a few simple, parallel- veined leaves at the base .

Grapes stand at the end of cylindrical, smooth inflorescence shafts . The numerous flowers are in the axilla of small, membranous bracts . The straight flower stalks grow to fruit ripeness and then stand out. The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The six uniformly shaped bracts are fused to one third to half of their length tubular, bell-shaped or funnel-shaped. The unwaxed part of the bracts is more or less curved outwards. The colors of the bracts range from white to cream to brown or, more rarely, from blue to purple; often their color changes from budding to fruiting. There are two circles with three stamens each; the short anthers are blue. The three pistils have become a top permanent ovary grown. The capsule fruit is triangular in cross section with winged edges. The seeds are more or less spherical and frosted, rarely elongated and shiny.

Systematics

The genus Bellevalia was first published in 1808 by Philippe-Isidore Picot de Lapeyrouse . The genus name honors the French botanist Pierre Richer de Belleval (1564–1632). A synonym for Bellevalia Lapeyr. is: Strangweja Bertol. The homonym Bellevalia Roem. & Schult. is a synonym of the genus Richeria Vahl from the family Phyllanthaceae .

Some species used to belong to the genus Hyacinthus . The genus Bellevalia belongs to the tribe Hyacintheae in the subfamily of Scilloideae within the family Asparagaceae .

There are around 70 types of Bellevalia :
