Bellevalia dubia is a species of the genus Bellevalia in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
features
Bellevalia dubia is a perennial onion plant that reaches heights of 15 to 40 centimeters. The leaves are 4 to 13 millimeters wide and prostrate.
The flowers are 5 to 10 millimeters in size and cylindrical-bell-shaped. They are initially sky-blue in color, later they turn gray-violet or brownish with green-veined, white tips. The grape is cylindrical and has 10 to 30 flowers. The flowers and capsules are usually longer than the flower stalks. The capsules have wide, obverse-shaped, 7 to 10 millimeters wide flaps that are edged at the tip.
The flowering period extends from March to April.
Occurrence
Bellevalia dubia is common in the Mediterranean area. In Crete it is known from a site on the northwestern peninsula of Gramvousa ( Kissamos ), where it occurs on rocks at an altitude of 300 meters.
Systematics
One can distinguish three subspecies:
- Bellevalia dubia subsp. boissieri (Freyn) Feinbrun : It occurs in southern Italy and from the Balkan Peninsula to western Turkey. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 8.
- Bellevalia dubia subsp. dubia : It occurs in Sicily, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
- Bellevalia dubia subsp. hackelii (Freyn) Feinbrun : It occurs only in southwestern Portugal.
