Bellevalia brevipedicellata is a species of the genus Bellevalia in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Bellevalia brevipedicellata is a perennial bulb plant that reaches heights of 6 to 18 centimeters. The leaves are ribbon-shaped, 10 to 40 millimeters wide and often slightly wavy at the edge.

The flowers are 9 to 30 in a cylindrical raceme ; many of them are sterile. The flower stalks are 0.5 to 1.5 millimeters long. The flowers are 5.5 to 7 millimeters in size, short tubular and white in color; the tips are pink with a green stripe. The up to ten capsules per grape are 8 to 13 mm long and 8 to 11 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from January to March.

Bellevalia brevipedicellata has a diploid set of chromosomes ; the number of chromosomes is 2n = 8.

Occurrence and endangerment

Bellevalia brevipedicellata is endemic to Crete in the Chania regional district and occurs in the southwest of the main island and on the offshore islands of Gavdos and Gavdopoula . The species grows in Phrygana on stony to rocky, calcareous substrate at altitudes of 0 to 250 meters. It is classified as endangered ("Vulnerable") in Greece's Red List of Endangered Species .

Similar species

Bellevalia sitiaca , a very similar, therefore temporarilyassigned to Bellevalia brevipedicellata , but tetraploid ,endemic speciesin the Lasithi Prefecture, was newly described in 1999. Because of their large capsules, both species have beenconfusedwith the Muscari macrocarpum, which ismissing on Crete.
