John Richard "Jack" Williams (born October 29, 1909 in Los Angeles , California , † August 24, 1998 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and from 1967 to 1975 governor of the state of Arizona.

Early years and political advancement

Jack Williams lost his right eye as a child, which had to be surgically removed because of a tumor. His family moved to Phoenix , Arizona, where he attended Phoenix Junior College before joining KOY radio in 1929 . He was one of the most popular radio announcers in Arizona for 40 years, directing the popular This and That commentary. He always started it with the words: “It's another beautiful day in Arizona. Leave us all enjoy it! ”Williams was Vice President of the Phoenix Housing Authority between 1944 and 1947 and President of the Phoenix Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1946 . In 1956 he was elected Mayor of Phoenix and served two terms.

Governor of Arizona

He was elected governor of Arizona in 1966 and held office until 1975. Williams was the first governor to be elected to a four-year term. He was a committed, conservative politician whose efforts were directed towards strong economic growth in the state. He also served on the National Governors' Conference Executive Committee from 1970 to 1971 . He served as the governor of Arizona from January 2, 1967 to January 6, 1975.
