Wesley Bolin

Harvey Wesley Bolin (born July 1, 1909 at Butler , Missouri , †  March 4, 1978 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and governor of the state of Arizona from 1977 to 1978 .

Early years and political advancement

His family moved to Phoenix when he was seven. There he later graduated from Phoenix Union High School and Phoenix College . He then worked for several business companies in the Salt River Valley before he was elected constable in West Phoenix Precinct in 1938 . From 1943 to 1948, Bolin served as Justice of the Peace at the West Phoenix Precinct Court . Last year he was elected Secretary of State . He held this office for 13 subsequent terms. During that time, Bolin served one term as President of the National Association of Secretaries of State . He also served on the Associations Executive Board from 1953 to 1977 .

Governor of Arizona

He became governor of Arizona in October 1977 when Raul Hector Castro resigned to accept the post of US ambassador to Argentina . During his tenure as governor, the State Bar of Arizona presented him with the first Liberty Bell Award in Arizona in recognition of his role as Justice.

He was married to Marion Elizabeth Wallinder; the couple had five children together. After his death in 1978, the Plaza in Downtown Phoenix across from the Arizona State Capitol was named after him.
