Ernest William McFarland (born October 9, 1894 near Earlsboro , Pottawatomie County , Oklahoma , † June 8, 1984 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a US Senator from 1941 to 1953 and Governor of the State of Arizona from 1955 to 1959 .

Early years and political advancement

McFarland attended East Central Oklahoma Teachers College from 1913 to 1914 and was at the University of Oklahoma at Norman in 1917 . During the First World War he served in the United States Navy . After the war, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona. There he worked for a bank for some time. He then attended the Law Department at Stanford University in California , where he graduated in 1921. When he was admitted to the Arizona Bar, he first practiced in Casa Grande , Arizona.

He was also Deputy Attorney General of Arizona from 1923 to 1924 . He then served as a prosecutor in Pinal County from 1925 to 1930 and ultimately held a position as judge at the Pinal County Superior Court from 1936 to 1940 .

Senator and Governor

McFarland took office in Congress on January 3, 1941, as Class 1 Senator and successor to Henry F. Ashurst . In 1951 he was elected Majority Leader and served in that position until 1952, when Republican Barry Goldwater beat him in the Senate elections. He left office on January 3, 1953.

On November 2, 1954, McFarland was elected governor of Arizona and sworn in on January 3, 1955. He was re-elected for a second term in 1956. During his tenure, the State Parks System was established, the Colorado River Boundary Commission established, and state aid to schools expanded. The Interstate Oil Compact was also approved and the State Racing Commission was given jurisdiction. He left office on January 5, 1959.

After serving in the US Senate, McFarland was appointed to the Arizona Supreme Court in 1964. There he later served as Chief Justice from 1968 to 1970 . He was also a member of the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence from 1968 to 1969 . He was also a director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco and president of the KTVK Arizona Television Company .

Ernest William McFarland died on June 8, 1984 and was buried in Greenwood Memorial Park in Phoenix. He was married to Edna Eveland Smith. The couple had one child together.

He got out of the University of Arizona and Arizona State University each have a Doctor of Laws .
