The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Oklahoma and has an area of ​​2055 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lincoln County , Okfuskee County , Seminole County , Pontotoc County , McClain County , Cleveland County, and Oklahoma County .

Pottawatomie County was formed as the original Free Territory County in 1891. It was named after the North American Indian tribe Potawatomi . The county was settled by white settlers during the second official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on September 22, 1891.

According to the 2000 census , Pottawatomie County had 65,521 people in 24,540 households and 17,717 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.88 percent white, 2.89 percent African American, 11.20 percent Native American, 0.60 percent Asian, 0.11 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.65 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 4.67 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.36 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
