Pittsburg County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is McAlester .

The county is located in southeastern Oklahoma and has an area of ​​3569 square kilometers, of which 186 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: McIntosh County , Haskell County , Latimer County , Pushmataha County , Atoka County , Coal County, and Hughes County .

Pittsburg County was formed from Choctaw Land on July 16, 1907 as the original county . It was named after Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , the hometown of some of the early settlers.

As of the 2000 census , Pittsburg County had 43,953 people in 17,157 households and 11,941 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.20 percent white, 4.02 percent African American, 12.50 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.78 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.20 percent were descended from two or more races.
