Sequoyah

Sequoyah County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Sallisaw .

The county is located in eastern Oklahoma, bordering Arkansas, and has an area of 1,852 square kilometers, of which 106 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cherokee County , Adair County , Crawford County, Arkansas, Sebastian County, Arkansas, Le Flore County , Haskell County, and Muskogee Counties .

history

Sequoyah County was formed as the original county from Cherokee Country on July 16, 1907 . It was named after Sequoyah , a Cherokee leader and inventor of the Cherokee syllabary .

According to the 2000 census , Sequoyah County had 38,972 people in 14,761 households and 10,982 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.12 percent white, 1.86 percent African American, 19.64 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.74 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 9.39 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.03 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 14,761 households, 34.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers. 25.6 percent were not families, 22.4 percent were single households and 10.2 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.05 people.

27.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.5 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 92.5 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 27,615 , and the median income for a family was $ 32,673. Males had a median income of $ 26,613 versus $ 19,751 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,405. 16.1 percent of families and 19.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
