Sequoyah County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Sallisaw .

The county is located in eastern Oklahoma, bordering Arkansas, and has an area of ​​1,852 square kilometers, of which 106 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cherokee County , Adair County , Crawford County, Arkansas, Sebastian County, Arkansas, Le Flore County , Haskell County, and Muskogee Counties .

history

Sequoyah County was formed as the original county from Cherokee Country on July 16, 1907 . It was named after Sequoyah , a Cherokee leader and inventor of the Cherokee syllabary .

There is a National Historic Landmark in the county , Sequoyah's Cabin . 15 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 5, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Sequoyah County had 38,972 people in 14,761 households and 10,982 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.12 percent white, 1.86 percent African American, 19.64 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.74 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 9.39 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.03 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
