Pontotoc County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Ada .

The county is located in south-central Oklahoma and has an area of 1,879 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Seminole County , Hughes County , Coal County , Johnston County , Murray County , Garvin County, and McClain Counties .
history
Pontotoc County was formed as the original county from Chickasaw Land on July 16, 1907 . It was named after an Indian word of the Chickasaw.
Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 6, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Pontotoc County had 35,143 people in 13,978 households and 9,421 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.80 percent white, 2.06 percent African American, 15.51 percent Native American, 0.46 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.79 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.36 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.30 percent of the population.
Of the 13,978 households, 30.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers. 32.6 percent were not families, 28.1 percent were single households and 12.3 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 12.5 percent between 18 and 24, 26.0 percent between 25 and 44, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 90.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 26,955 USD and the median income for a family was 35,400 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,785 versus $ 18,939 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,664. 11.8 percent of families and 16.5 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
