The Pottawatomie County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma . The county seat is Shawnee .

The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Oklahoma and has an area of 2055 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lincoln County , Okfuskee County , Seminole County , Pontotoc County , McClain County , Cleveland County, and Oklahoma County .
history
Pottawatomie County was formed as the original Free Territory County in 1891. It was named after the North American Indian tribe Potawatomi . The county was settled by white settlers during the second official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on September 22, 1891.

According to the 2000 census , Pottawatomie County had 65,521 people in 24,540 households and 17,717 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.88 percent white, 2.89 percent African American, 11.20 percent Native American, 0.60 percent Asian, 0.11 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.65 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 4.67 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.36 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 24,540 households, 32.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.5 percent were married couples living together, 11.8 percent were single mothers. 27.8 percent were not families, 24.0 percent were single households and people aged 65 years or over lived in 10.5 percent of the households. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.02 people.
25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.2 percent between 18 and 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.8 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 89.2 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,573 , and the median income for a family was $ 38,162. Males had a median income of $ 31,104 versus $ 21,460 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,972. 11.6 percent of families and 14.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
